South Africa's football captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has died after being shot, police say.
Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead yesterday by unknown gunmen at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg.
The 27-year-old had played in South Africa’s last four matches for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Meyiwa also played for football club, Orlando Pirates, and had just concluded a match with them on Saturday, in which they advanced to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup.
According to a police report obtained by BBC, two unknown gunmen entered Meyiwa’s girlfriend’s house last night, while the third remained outside.
All three gunmen reportedly fled after gunshots were heard. Meyiwa was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Local media have reported that it was an attempted burglary, but investigations are still ongoing.
Authorities are offering a reward of $14,000 for anyone who has information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest.
